Director of Healthcare Economics and Reimbursement

The Position:  Director of Healthcare Economics and Reimbursement
The Director of Healthcare Economics and Reimbursement is responsible for all aspects of Northstar Neuroscience’s Healthcare Economics and Reimbursement plans.  This includes creating and maintaining coverage and reimbursement strategies and tactics for current and potential products and procedures.  This position will serve as the primary contact for all Healthcare Economic and Reimbursement related issues including government relations and private payer relations.
Position Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Responsibilities include identifying and developing key reimbursement strategies for Northstar’s Renova-STÔ  Cortical Stimulation product and products in development, including preparing analyses to evaluate Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance coding, coverage and payment.
  • Drive and support favorable coverage and reimbursement for Northstar products and related procedures.
  • Monitor, influence and manage Medicare policies and regulation as well as private payor trends.  Manage all local and national government relations as it pertains to healthcare economics and policy.
  • Provide billing and reimbursement support to key internal and external customers; including the development of handbooks, hotline, billing guides, payer reference materials, and sales training modules.
  • Work cross-functionally within the organization to ensure reimbursement and outcome planning is reflected in overall development plans and timelines.
  • Determine future resource needs within reimbursement department and hire and staff accordingly.  This may include management of several reimbursement consultants.
  • Drive the submission of all necessary coding applications
  • Build and manage relationships with key professional organizations, including physicians/medical societies, patients, payers, employer groups, and trade associations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

The Person
The Director of Healthcare Economics and Reimbursement should possess excellent oral and written communications skills and be highly creative, resourceful, and organized.  This person should be a strong strategic thinker who also understands how to translate “the big picture” into actionable activities.  This person should work well cross-functionally and should thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.  This person should be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to meet budgets and deadlines. This person should have strong leadership skills and be an approachable, supportive manager.  This person must be willing to travel up to 40%.

Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree is required;  MBA Preferred.
  • 10+ years experience in reimbursement, government affairs and/or managed care relations, which includes experience introducing new technology into the managed care environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and successes with reimbursement, Medicare policy, outcomes research, and new technology.
  • This position will eventually supervise other employees.  This position will also immediately manage outside vendors and consultants.
  • Requires strong computer skills with various software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
