Engineer/Principal System Engineer
Position Summary:
This position is a key member of the Engineering
group and reports directly to and advises the Vice
President of Product Development regarding the
technology roadmap. The individuals leads
the technical efforts to conceptualize, develop
and introduce new products, innovating through
design while delivering high quality engineering
solutions. The individual has key responsibility
for the architecture and design of current and
new product systems for Northstar Neuroscience
as well as keeping abreast of the current state
of the art and emerging technologies applicable
to Northstar’s products.
Position Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Overall technical responsibility for the design
approaches of current and new products.
- Creating a vision for, and defining the system
architecture for cortical stimulation device systems.
- Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary engineering
team to conceptualize and define the device and
device subsystem architectures that compromise
the cortical stimulation system.
- Ensuring complete and accurate translation of
product needs into specifications and ultimately
into designs.
- Working with Project Leaders to create requirement
specifications for cortical stimulation device
systems.
- Responsible for the overall system architecture
and safety concept for product systems, as well
as the application of suitable safety approaches
for individual devices.
- Knowledge of design, safety standards and regulations;
responsible for incorporating them into specifications.
- Collaborating with key team members to ensure
traceability from product needs to validation plans
and protocols, and from requirement specifications
to verification plans and protocols.
- Overall responsibility for design decomposition
and traceability from product needs to requirement
specifications and designs, as well as integration
of designs into subsystems, devices and complete
device systems.
- Assisting in the mentoring and development of
members of the engineering team through a hands-on
approach and active participation in design reviews.
- Providing input on ways to streamline the product
development process while at eh same time improving
product quality.
- Keeping abreast of the current state of the art,
and of emerging technologies applicable to Northstar’s
device systems.
- Advising the Vice President of Product Development
regarding the technology roadmap.
The person:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Masters
Degree preferred
- 10+ years experience in the design of medical
device systems
- Has taken medical device projects from inception
to commercial deployment
- Has a positive attitude who can focus as a Micro
and Macro Problem Solver
- Experience or knowledge of :
- Biocompatibility- material selections
- Sterilization- compatibility of materials/designs
- Human Factors/ Use Errors/ Sensitivity to the
user’s point of view
- Electromagnetic Compatibility
- Spectrum management regulations: FCC, R&TTE,
etc.
- Reliability concepts
- Design control
- Standards for Medical Device design and safety
- Mechanical/ Electrical interfaces
- Electrical/ Software interfaces
- Hardware/ Software design tradeoffs
- Manufacturing processes, including challenges/opportunities
in manufacturing test
- Verification and validation
