Susan Barnes
Wende Hutton
Ms. Hutton is currently a Venture Partner at Canaan
Partners. Ms. Hutton began her venture career at Mayfield
in 1993, where she was a General Partner in the life
sciences group. Recently, she was a General Partner
at Spring Ridge Ventures, a health care-focused venture
fund. Earlier in her career, Ms. Hutton held senior
management positions at GenPharm International and
Nellcor. Ms. Hutton has served on the board of directors
for over 14 companies, and, in addition to her duties
at Northstar, is currently a director of SenoRx and
Alsius. Ms. Hutton holds an B.A. in human biology
from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard
Business School, where she was a Baker Scholar.
Alan Levy, Ph.D.
Dr. Levy is the President and CEO of Northstar Neuroscience.
He has more than 30 years of experience in the medical
products industry. Dr. Levy was formerly President
and CEO of Heartstream, Inc., and President of Heart
Technology, Inc., where he guided these companies
through product development, several rounds of venture
financing, FDA clearance and product launch, manufacturing
scale-up, IPO's, and worldwide sales and distribution.
He also served as Vice President of Research and New
Product Development of Ethicon Inc., a division of
Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Levy served on the board
of Gynecare, Inc., a medical device company acquired
by Johnson & Johnson, and currently serves on
the boards of Intuitive Surgical Corporation and Proteus
Biomedical. Dr. Levy received his B.S. in chemistry
from City University of New York and his Ph.D. in
organic chemistry from Purdue University.
Seth Rudnick, MD
Dr. Rudnick’s experience in the health care industry includes comprehensive experience in research, development, clinical trials analysis and
biotechnology, as well as founding and growing start-up companies. Dr. Rudnick currently serves on the Board of Directors of Genaissance
(GNSC), CombinatoRx, Immunicon (IMMC), Phylogix, Pintex, Sopherion, Spine Wave, Northstar, and several other private companies. Prior to
joining Canaan, Mr. Rudnick served as CEO and Chairman at CytoTherapeutics (CTII). Before that, he helped found and served as head of R&D
for Ortho Biotech, a division of Johnson & Johnson. In that role, he led development efforts for a portfolio of projects whose worldwide
revenues now exceed $1 billion in annual sales. Dr. Rudnick’s academic career began when he served on the medical and public health faculty
at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Dr. Rudnick is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he teaches
and advises the faculty on biotechnology issues.
Dale Spencer
Mr. Spencer is a co-founder of ProtoStar, Inc., Velocimed, Inc., and founder of ev3, Inc. Previously, Mr. Spencer served as President, Chairman,
and CEO of SciMed Life Systems, Inc., from 1980 until Boston Scientific acquired the company in 1995. Mr. Spencer joined SciMed in 1980 when the
company’s sales were less than $1 million per year. At the time of the Boston Scientific merger, SciMed had annual sales of approximately $450 million
and was a global leader in interventional cardiology products. Mr. Spencer served on the Board of Directors of Boston Scientific Corporation from 1995 to
1999, and also served as an Executive Vice President of Boston Scientific from 1995 to 1997. Mr. Spencer has served on the boards of 12 early-stage
medical technology companies, and currently serves on the boards of 4 such companies and one public company. Mr. Spencer received a B.S. in engineering
and an M.B.A. from the University of Illinois.
Jesse Treu, Ph.D.
Mr. Treu has been a General Partner of Domain Associates since its beginning in 1985. He has been a Director of over 20 early-stage
healthcare companies, 13 of which subsequently went public. These include Biosite Diagnostics, GelTex Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Genzyme),
Inspire Pharmaceuticals, NPS Pharmaceuticals, Sepracor, OraPharma (acquired by J&J), and Trimeris. Prior to the formation of Domain, Mr. Treu
was V.P. of the predecessor organization to The Wilkerson Group, and its venture capital arm, CW Ventures. While at CW Ventures, he served as
President and CEO of Microsonics, a pioneer in computer image processing for cardiology. Mr. Treu began his career at GE and was later an executive
at Technicon Corporation (now part of Bayer Diagnostics). Mr. Treu has a B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.A. and Ph.D. from
Princeton University.
Carol Winslow
Ms. Winslow spent over 20 years in the medical technology industry, including 12 years of private and public medical technology investment experience, prior
to founding CHANNEL Medical PartnersSM. She was the Senior Medical Device Analyst at Jefferies & Company, Inc., Vector Securities International, Inc.,
and Dain Bosworth Incorporated with responsibility for those firms' equity research activities within the medical technology industry. Earlier in her career,
Ms. Winslow held a variety of management positions with Medtronic, Inc. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Refugee Committee. Ms.
Winslow received an A.B. degree from Mount Holyoke College and an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota.
